The second edition if the Africa Cup of Slam Poetry (CASP) is in progress! The first events were held digitally in July 2021, resulting in 8 finalists. The 8 finalists will meet up physically in Addis Abeba on February 16-19, 2022, to compete for the second title of Champion of Slam Poetry in Africa.
The Africa Cup of Slam Poetry (CASP) is a “Panafricanist” event that brings together artistic talent from Africa and globally. CASP creates synergy, unification in the artistic scene and hence works on a united Africa. Slam Poetry, the celebration of words, has become an important cultural expression in many African countries over the past decade. CASP promotes Slam Poetry as a uniting force. The Africa Cup of Slam Poetry is a continental competition that takes place every two years. The first edition was in N'Djamena, Chad 2018 with 20 countries competing and Senegal emerging as the winner. |
CASP 2022The second edition of CASP was planned to take place in Addis Abeba, November 2020. Ethiopia was selected as the host counry after an open application process.
Because of the pandemic, this event was postponed. In order to move forward and host the event without gathering too many people, the first events were held virtually in July 2021. 33 countries competed in the group matches with audiences, jury members and performing artists from over 50 countries across the world. After 4 days of virtual performances and competitions, 8 candidates were selected to compete in person in the Quarter finals in Addis Abeba. The candidates will meet in person in Addis on February 16-19, 2022. |

CASP 2018
The first edition of the Africa Cup of Slam Poetry took place in N'Djamena, Chad, in November 2018. The event was a 5-day festival filled with concerts, workshops, panel discussions and of course the championship competition. 20 countries participated in the Cup battling it out for the continental trophy. There was a draw for placements in the group matches, then the round of 16, quarter finals, semifinal, match of third place and the final itself. Al Faruq from Senegal emerged as the winner and Thuthu from South Africa came in second.
